I Thought i'd take some time to write a little bit about the importance of cleaning the cooling fins on your small engine. Air cooled engines are completely reliant on the ability to move air around the cooling fins. If this doesn't happen efficiently, the engine will overheat and cause all kinds of problems. Cooling fins can cause blown head gaskets, valve guides coming loose, valve seats coming completely out of the head and even damage to the head or cylinder itself. In most cases there is no warning of the failure either. You will be using your mower thinking everything is ok, then suddenly there is a very serious and costly failure. We see this in the shop all the time. Engines get dirty and have build up on the fins and then there is a major failure with a very significant cost to repair. I figured I would write this to potentially save our customers some costly repairs down the road. A good practice for commercial landscapers and even homeowners is to remove the engine cover and clean out all of the cooling fins at least once a year. Depending on the amount of dirt and oil build up you will need a brush, some strong degreaser, some rags and a long screwdriver to scrape between the fins. If you have an air compressor you can blow the debris out of the fins too. If you have a pressure washer you can soak with degreaser and then pressure wash the fins clean. This takes some time but it is well worth it in comparison to the cost to rebuild a cylinder head. If this is beyond what you wish to tackle you can always bring your mower to our shop and we would be happy to perform this service for you.
